cPanel Email Routing Options

cPanel Email Routing OptionsEmail routing in cPanel is a feature that allows you to control how incoming email messages are processed by the email server. The email server can either be your hosting provider's local email server or the email server of your chosen email provider such as G Suite, Office365 or others.

There are four options for configuring email routing in cPanel:

  • Automatically Detect Configuration: This option uses the following criteria to configure the email routing settings:
    • Local Mail Exchanger (MX) - The lowest numbered mail exchanger points to an IP address on this server.
    • Backup Mail Exchanger (MX) - The lowest numbered mail exchanger points to an IP address not on this server.
    • Remote Mail Exchanger (MX) - No mail exchangers point to an IP address on this server.
  • Local Mail Exchanger: The server will always accept mail for the domain.
  • Backup Mail Exchanger: The server will accept mail for the domain and store it until a higher priority mail server becomes available.
  • Remote Mail Exchanger: The server will never accept mail for the domain.

The default and recommended setting is "Automatically Detect Configuration". This setting will ensure that your email messages are routed to the correct destination based on the MX records for your domain.

If you need to change the email routing settings for your domain, you can do so by following the steps above.

Here are some additional benefits of using email routing:

  • Security: Email routing can help to improve the security of your email messages by preventing them from being delivered to unauthorized servers.
  • Reliability: Email routing can help to improve the reliability of your email service by ensuring that your messages are always delivered, even if the primary mail server is unavailable.
  • Flexibility: Email routing gives you more flexibility in how you manage your email messages. You can choose to have all of your messages routed to your hosting provider's local email server, or you can choose to have some of your messages routed to a different email provider.

If you are not already using email routing, I encourage you to set it up. It is a simple and effective way to improve the security, reliability, and flexibility of your email service.
